Working with disc images in Windows 3.x

Basics before starting

Working with disc images on Windows 3.x is done with batch files. More about how to author batch files to prepare your games to run can be found in article running games from batch files.

Setting the environment right

By default Windows 3.x runs batch files in full screen DOS Prompt which is annoying. You can fix this by configuring batch files to run in a window with these steps:

  1. From Program Manager open Main Program Group and run PIF Editor.

  2. Select File menu and select Open...

  3. Select file _DEFAULT.PIF and click OK.

  4. Set Video Memory to High Graphics and Display Usage to Windowed:

  1. Select File menu, select Save and then close the window.

Adding icons for batch files

You've now added MOUNTER.BAT to your game directory for example Civilization II which was installed in C:\CIV2.

Now we must add the icon for the batch file to game Program Group like this:

  1. With the correct Program Group active select File and select New...

  2. Select Program Item and select OK.

  3. In description box type name of the icon for example Image Mounter and select Browse...

  4. Select the batch file you created and select OK:
